Large fire erupts at Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra’s home in southwest Miami-Dade
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A large fire erupted Thursday morning at the home of Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, an assistant coach at the scene confirmed to Local 10 News.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the fire was reported just after 4:30 a.m. at the home along Southwest 80th Street.
Officials said firefighters arrived at the scene and found two structures on the property engulfed in flames.
“The call was upgraded to a second alarm for additional man power,” MDFR said in an email to Local 10 News. “Due to a partial collapse, units switched to a defensive attack.”
Video taken at the scene shows the basketball coach distraught outside his home.
MDFR Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd later spoke to reporters at the scene, saying more than 20 units responded to the blaze.
She said firefighters arrived to find “fire as tall as the trees” and battled the flames with fire engines and aerial apparatuses.
“Due to the privacy wall and a lot of tree cover, it was very difficult to access with only one point of entry,” Byrd said.
The battalion chief confirmed that the fire was extinguished before flames could spread to surrounding homes.
A neighbor told Local 10 News reporter Hannah Yechivi that Spoelstra’s home had been under renovation for at least a year.
He said he believed the renovations had been completed, however, as Spoelstra hosted a large party recently in his backyard.
No injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire remains unclear.
