Rumors indicate Apple is planning something special for its 20th anniversary iPhone model, the ‘iPhone 20.’ We’re expecting an all-glass display with no cutout, and the latest leak says the new model could drop every physical button in favor of solid-state buttons with haptic feedback.

Solid-state buttons might finally be coming to iPhone

Leaker Instant Digital writes on Weibo [translation]:

The solid-state button scheme of Apple iPhone has completed the functional verification and is planned to be mass-produced and applied on the iPhone 20 in 2027. At that time, the power button, volume button, operation button and camera control button will be upgraded to solid-state buttons with local vibration feedback!

This is far from the first time that Apple has been predicted to replace physical iPhone buttons with solid-state options.

We were last expecting the switch to happen with iPhone 16 Pro, for example. That didn’t pan out.

However, if the company was ever going to actually ship the change, the new ‘iPhone 20’ model seems a great candidate.

Similar to the iPhone X that marked the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, we’re expecting an especially unique new iPhone 20 in 2027.

Rumors indicate it could have an all-glass, wrap-around display with no cutouts. But since we’re still a couple years out, it’s highly possible for the final details to change before launch.

If Apple does replace all physical buttons in the device with haptic feedback, it could be related to the rumored wrap-around display. So I’m giving this leak a little more weight than I normally might for a two-year-out model.

How would you feel about Apple replacing the iPhone 20’s physical buttons with solid-state haptics? Let us know in the comments.
