The lack of cosmetic changes on the new MacBook Pro might paint an impression that Apple just incorporated its new M5 chipset and called it a day. Fortunately, there are a ton of upgrades added to the portable Mac, including a significantly faster SSD, with the latest comparison against the M4 MacBook Pro showing up to a whopping 211 percent difference in SSD read and write speeds.
New Blackmagic speed test shows the M5 MacBook Pro obtains the highest lead in the sequential read category
A closer look at both the M5 MacBook Pro and M4 MacBook Pro reveals that both machines feature the same internal layout, single fan and single heatpipe cooling solution, along with two NAND flash memory chips for maximizing SSD performance. After showcasing these differences, YouTube channel Max Tech wasted no time in firing up Blackmagic speed test to see if the M5 MacBook Pro offers any performance gains.
Sure enough, those looking to upgrade to the newer model will be pleased to know that in both the Blackmagic sequential read and write speed tests, the M5 MacBook Pro crosses the 6,000MB/s threshold. The differences are given below, with the M4 MacBook Pro’s read and write speeds provided as well.
Blackmagic read speed test
- M5 MacBook Pro – 6,323MB/s (211.3 percent faster)
- M4 MacBook Pro – 2,031MB/s
Blackmagic write speed test
- M5 MacBook Pro – 6,068MB/s (84.31 percent faster)
- M4 MacBook Pro – 3,293MB/s
The aforementioned speeds are similar to standalone PCIe NVMe Gen 4 solid-state drives installed in desktop and laptop computers, and judging by the speeds obtained by the M5 MacBook Pro, Apple has likely upgraded the SSD controller on the new machine, but we could not get a hold of those specifications.
From the same YouTuber, we also learned that the M5 can get quite toasty when running intensive workloads and can reach 99 degrees Celsius. Thankfully, it runs much cooler than the M4 MacBook Pro. The faster SSD in the M5 MacBook Pro will allow the latter to be snappier and open up applications quicker and if you are interested in upgrading to the latest version, Amazon is currently selling the base model for $1,583 in Space Black.
