‘Marshals’ Renewed For Season 2 At CBS
Kayce Dutton has received an early call to fight more crime after Marshals was renewed for a second season.
CBS has picked up the Yellowstone spinoff after only two episodes. It’s extremely rare for the network to renew a show after only two weeks.
The company clearly wants to remain in the Taylor Sheridan universe, despite him signing an overall deal last year with NBCUniversal that begins in 2029 on the TV side. Sheridan has a number of other series across Paramount including The Madison, which premieres on Paramount+ on March 14, as well as another Yellowstone spinoff, The Dutton Ranch, starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser in addition to Annette Bening and Ed Harris.
It comes after the premiere episode became the most-watched network original series premiere without a football lead in since 2017 when another spinoff of a long-running show, The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon, premiered.
The show, which stars Luke Grimes, was a big hit for the Paramount-owned network out of the gate. In live+same day ratings from Nielsen, it drew 9.52M viewers, making it the top new series premiere of the ‘25/’26 broadcast season. These numbers grew over its first seven days to total 20.6M multiplatform viewers for its premiere on March 1.
Grimes stars as Kayce Dutton, son of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, who after Yellowstone stayed in Montana and is persuaded to join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals led by his friend Pete Calvin, played by Logan Marshall-Green.
In the first episode, this group, which also includes Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means), is searching for some bad guys hiding in the depths of the ranch.
The series also features a number of familiar faces from Yellowstone; Brecken Merrill, reprising his role as Kayce’s son Tate, Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty as Mo.
The first episode also revealed that Kayce’s wife Monica Dutton, played by Kelsey Asbille, died between Yellowstone and Marshals.
The series is produced by Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios. It was created by Spencer Hudnut, who previously served as showrunner of CBS’ SEAL Team. It is exec produced by Hudnut, Grimes, Sheridan, David Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Spencer Hudnut, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Freidman and Greg Yaitanes.
It is one of a number of renewals for CBS in the last couple of months; it picked up Tracker for Season 4, Matlock for Season 3, Elsbeth for Season 4, Fire Country for Season 5, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage for Season 3 as well as renewals for the NCIS shows. In December, it also renewed Boston Blue and Sheriff Country.
All of this activity, which also includes multi-year renewals for FBI and Ghosts, means that the only CBS scripted shows that are still waiting to hear their fate are Watson and DMV with new series Cupertino and Einstein also on the docket for next season.
“Marshals delivered a breakout performance, capturing a massive audience across platforms and quickly establishing itself as one of TV’s most powerful new series,” said Amy Reisenbach, president, CBS Entertainment. “The overwhelming viewer response speaks to the strength of the Yellowstone world, the bold character driven storytelling from the creative team and the dynamic cast performances led by Luke Grimes.”
