Measles case confirmed at Bingham High School childcare facility
SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (KUTV) — The Salt Lake County Health Department confirmed a case of measles in the Bingham Kopper Kids childcare facility.
The infected person is unvaccinated, and the source of the infection is unknown.
They were reportedly infectious while attending the facility — which is within Bingham High School — from Dec. 1-5.

The health department stated that they have been working closely with the high school to notify those known to have had direct contact with the infected person.
“Because measles is exceptionally contagious, can travel through the air, and can remain in the air even after an infected person leaves the area, health officials and the school district also notified everyone in the Bingham High School community of this possible exposure,” the health department said in a press release.
Dorothy Adams, SLCoHD executive director, said that because measles is extremely contagious, quick action is critical.
“Because we don’t know where this infection originated, it’s important that everyone in the Bingham school community be aware of symptoms and the possibility they were exposed,” Adams said.
Measles symptoms, such as a high fever, cough, runny nose, or watery eyes, typically appear 7 to 21 days after exposure.
Those who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk of infection. Two doses of the MMR vaccine prevent more than 97% of measles infections.
Vaccinated individuals who do get measles tend to experience milder symptoms and are less likely to spread the virus.
“Anyone associated with Bingham High School who develops symptoms should call their healthcare provider or clinic before arriving so the facility can provide instructions about how to seek care without exposing other people to the virus,” the health department said.
The Jordan School District sent the following statement.
“Jordan School District is working closely with the Salt Lake County Health Department to address a confirmed measles case associated with Bingham High School’s Daycare Program. A guidance letter from Salt Lake County Health has been sent to the school community informing families of the situation. The health and safety of our students and staff are our top priority.”
