Mega Crit are working on three new Slay the Spire 2 modes, just don’t place any bets on them all making it in
I’ve not had a punt at Slay the Spire 2 myself yet, I’ve been too busy coming up with an excuse for not having played the first one, but the general read I’ve got on it is “it’s more Slay the Spire!” This can be interpreted much the same as a vote for Bart being a vote for anarchy, as far as I can tell too. There is multiplayer now too, of course, changing things up in a notable way through this mode, but so far, so generally familiar. In a new interview with Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano over at PC Gamer, however, it sounds like a trio of new modes are in the works at least.
Yano explained that he’s keeping three types of people/things in mind throughout developing the game when it comes to these potential new modes. “The first one is a mode that is meant for people who want to play in a very competitive fashion,” Yano said. “The second one is for people who want to have the Slay the Spire experience, but not have the time to do so. And the third one is, what if there were other ways to interact with people socially or in a multiplayer kind of setting with the current systems that exist today. Those, to me, are the three different types of ways to interact with Slay the Spire that don’t exist right now.”
Important to note is that Yano isn’t entirely confident in any of these modes actually making it into the final game, even if they’re all somewhat designed already. “Maybe having those modes dilutes the core experience and might not make it at all,” he said. Yano isn’t particularly keen on having a plethora of modes just for the sake of it, perhaps slightly hyperbolically saying, “We don’t want to just make a bunch of things and be like, ‘Here’s 25 game modes.’ And if we know that only two of them are fun, I just despise the idea of having 23 worthless buttons on the screen. That’s a very big no-no for me.”
It’s still early days for the deckbuilding roguelike anyway, given that it only launched just last month, with plans for a fairly lengthy early access period. One, I might add, that the devs have said won’t be so linear, to such a degree that they even went back on some parts of a recent beta patch just because enough people didn’t like it.
