U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, is trying to hold the floor of the Senate as long as he can on Tuesday night.
On X, Merkley said he is holding the floor “to protest Trump’s grave threats to democracy. We cannot pretend this is normal.”
At around 4:30 p.m., Pacific Daylight Time, Merkley stood next to a poster on an easel that read, “Ring the alarm bells: AUTHORITARIANISM IS HERE NOW!”
Merkley at that time was talking about how his constituents like voting by mail.
He is calling out President Donald Trump’s methods and approach.
He has cited three main tactics he says the Trump administration is using:
- Changes to voter registration files;
- Gerrymandering House districts;
- And efforts to eliminate vote-by-mail.
He also spoken about what the president has done with federal funding this year.
He was still speaking on the Senate floor as of 11 p.m. Tuesday night.
Merkley’s protest comes amid the 21-day government shutdown.
