New Jersey residents should expect a wet and windy end to October with a nor’easter expected to bring rain and wind gusts up to 50 mph along with the potential for coastal flooding.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service calls for rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches across the state, but the heaviest rain is likely to be over in time for Halloween festivities on Friday evening.

“A storm system will impact the area Wednesday night through Thursday with rain and wind,” the weather service said early Monday.

On Wednesday, a complex system will begin approaching the region, bringing increasing cloud cover and a chance of light rain showers, particularly along the Jersey Shore, according to the weather service.

Temperatures will remain steady with highs in the mid to upper 50s and overnight lows in the 40s as cloud cover increases.

Thursday will bring the most significant weather impacts to New Jersey from the storm.

Periods of rain, occasionally heavy, and gusty winds are expected throughout Thursday into Thursday night.

Rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches in many areas with higher amounts possible near the coast.

Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, with some locations potentially seeing gusts approaching 50 mph.

The weather service said there’s a possibility for flooding from the heavy rainfall Thursday through Thursday night, particularly in poor drainage and urban areas.

Additionally, minor to locally moderate coastal flooding is possible along parts of the Jersey Shore during the Thursday night high tide cycle.

Rain is forecast to taper off Friday with some lingering showers, though gusty winds will continue.

Temperatures will remain in the 50s for highs.

Ahead of the rain, Monday will remain dry with temperatures warming to the 50s during the day.

The weather will also remain dry through most of Tuesday as high pressure continues to dominate, with highs in the low to mid-50s.

Tuesday night will be slightly warmer than Monday night with lows in the upper 30s to mid-40s.

Looking ahead to next weekend, conditions should remain mostly dry and seasonable, though there is a possibility for some showers developing later Sunday as another weather system approaches the region.

High temperatures this weekend will be in the mid to upper 50s and lows in the upper 30s to low 40s.
