A few days ago, renowned leaker Nate the Hate revealed that Nintendo is working on a remake of the classic game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for its Switch 2 console. Interestingly, another leaker, Shpeshal_Nick, had already discussed this in late 2024, when he claimed that the project had a “pretty big budget”. Now, following Nate’s corroboration, he added that Nintendo is also preparing a new Zelda-themed limited edition Switch 2 console to go with it, though he is not sure whether the game will actually be bundled with it.
It’s been a while since there was a Zelda-themed console. Nintendo released a Switch Lite edition to celebrate the launch of Echoes of Wisdom (the first game in the series where Princess Zelda is actually playable) in September 2024. Previously, they had launched a Zelda-themed Switch OLED alongside Tears of the Kingdom.
The long-awaited remake of Ocarina of Time seems like the perfect occasion to resume this tradition, especially if Nintendo is indeed betting heavily on it, as a big budget would suggest. The game deserves nothing less, being the highest-rated title on Metacritic with a nearly unbeatable average score of 99.
There are many reasons for its popularity, but chief among them was Nintendo’s solution to handle the new 3D action experience. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time introduced Z-targeting, a lock-on system that let players focus on enemies and navigate combat in three dimensions without the frustration that plagued most 3D games of the era. It was so effective that virtually every 3D action game since has used some version of the same mechanic.
Beyond that, the time-travel structure was brilliant, the dungeon design was exceptional, and the interconnected world, featuring NPC routines, a day/night cycle, and many secrets, was a joy to explore and served as inspiration for many subsequent action/adventure games.
It’ll be interesting to see how Nintendo adapts this all-time classic to modern-day standards. We’ll keep track of any noteworthy rumors as we get closer to the game’s launch.
