Phil Mickelson bows out of 2026 Masters due to ‘personal health matter’ in his family
Phil Mickelson will not take part in the 2026 Masters. The three-time Masters winner announced he’ll “be out for an extended period of time” due to a “personal health matter” in his family.
Mickelson announced the news on social media. He declined to go into specifics regarding his decision to step away from golf for a bit.

“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter. I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching.”
Mickelson, 55, has only played in one LIV event this year due to a personal family matter. His only appearance came last month in South Africa, where he finished T48. He missed the first four LIV events this season before his appearance in South Africa
“I will not be able to participate in the first two LIV Events as [my wife] Amy and I need to be present for a family health matter,” Mickelson wrote on X earlier this year. “I can’t wait to compete again and look forward to rejoining my teammates as soon as possible.”
With Mickelson out, it marks the first time since 1994 the Masters will not feature Mickelson or Tiger Woods. Following his arrest for suspected DUI on Friday, Woods announced he was taking an extended break to receive treatment. The Masters confirmed Woods would not take part in the tournament following his arrest.

Mickelson has three Masters wins under his belt — 2004, 2006 and 2010. While he hasn’t won the event in over a decade, he has come close a few times, finishing tied for third in 2012 and tied for second in both 2015 and 2023. He missed the cut last year.
