While the PS5 Pro is turning in utterly outstanding results in first-party games like Ghost of Yotei, third-party publishers are having a tougher time getting to grips with the hardware.
The Outer Worlds 2 is the latest effort to perform worst on Sony’s supercharged $750 hardware, according to experts Digital Foundry.
The tech-heads note that the system provides no real upgrades to performance over the base PS5, but PlayStation’s proprietary upscaler PSSR introduces all kinds of image quality issues, reducing the overall stability of the visuals.
This is consistent across all graphics modes, which include Performance (60fps), Quality (30fps), and Balanced (40fps at 120Hz).
What’s worse is that base PS5’s performance is already below the Xbox Series X in all profiles, introducing frame pacing and screen tearing issues that aren’t present on Microsoft’s machine.
All of these flaws also apply to the PS5 Pro, on top of the aforementioned image quality issues.
So, dev Obsidian has a lot of work still to do here, then.
Digital Foundry hypothesises that the PS5 ports may have been added later in development, and if you recall the game was originally announced as an Xbox exclusive before it got caught up in Microsoft’s multiformat shift.
As an additional warning, those of you planning to purchase the physical version of The Outer Worlds 2 should note that only 1.3GB of data is included on the disc, so you’re effectively splashing out for a download key in this case.
Beyond all of these issues, the game’s fine, though.
“The Outer Worlds 2 succeeds in being a bigger and better sequel, buoyed by an even greater emphasis on player choice and freedom,” we wrote in our 7/10 review.
“However, despite Obsidian’s clever writing, there’s a underlying dreariness to the property that it just can’t seem to escape. These dull characters and their one-note factions are difficult to truly care for.”
