PS6 Release Date Touted for 2027, Cheaper But Less Powerful Than Next Xbox

To quote PlayStation console architect Mark Cerny in a recent AMD video, next-gen is just a “few years away”. And it seems the target – consistent with past console release cycles – is 2027.

We’re beginning to get fairly regular and frequent leaks regarding the future format from a handful of sources, with KeplerL2 – a notorious hardware snoop over the years – saying “it’s the plan [to release the PS6 in 2027] unless any unexpected delays occur”.

That would align pretty perfectly with what Cerny himself said, and would be consistent with the seven-year cycle of the PS4.

There’s been some debate recently whether Microsoft will even have a new console, but the firm rebutted reports that it had cancelled its hardware plans last weekend.

Now a leak from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead claims Xbox is also planning to deploy a new device in 2027, although whether it will be a traditional console or some kind of hybrid PC remains to be seen.

According to hardware leaks from the aforementioned source – who accurately revealed the make-up of the PS5 Pro – the next Xbox (should it reach the market) will be packing more horsepower than the PS6, but is also likely to be considerably more expensive.

Obviously, we’ll need to wait and see what real-world advantages the Microsoft hardware has over Sony’s effort and how much it all actually matters.

Many fans feel like we’ve already reached the point of diminishing returns, so a few extra frames for potentially hundreds of dollars may not be a compelling proposition – especially when retailers are beginning to remove Microsoft’s current effort, the Xbox Series X|S, from stores.

To be honest, we’re still at least 18 months away from learning about each manufacturer’s next-gen plans, and a lot could change in that time. While we’re at that stage in the cycle now where these rumours won’t go away, we imagine most details are still in a state of flux.

Indeed, specs, clock speeds, release dates, and prices could all change before launch. It’s interesting to follow these rumours, then – and we’ll of course continue to update you on what we know – but it’s perhaps not worth thinking about it too much until many of these details get locked down.

In the meantime, how do you feel about a 2027 release date for the PS6? Will you be there day one, or does it all depend on the price and software? Let us know in the comments section below.
