Resident Evil Requiem crosses 6 million copies sold, becoming the fastest-selling game in the survival horror series’ history
March has been a super busy month when it comes to big video game releases, yet players haven’t stopped talking about late February’s Resident Evil Requiem, which has even climbed to the second top spot of Metacritic’s user score ranking. Now, Capcom has finally released sales numbers for the game so far, and it’s an even bigger launch than expected.
Straight from Capcom’s own site, a 16th March press release signed by Haruhiro Tsujimoto, President and COO, confirms the latest Resident Evil entry has been a massive mainstream hit. Requiem now exceeds 6 million units sold across all platforms (this seemingly includes digital and physical copies), “which is the fastest that a title in the series has reached this milestone.”
For reference, the two previous entries, Resident Evil 7 and Village, have each amassed around 16.4 and 13.5m units since 2017 and 2021 respectively, so it’s easy to appreciate Requiem’s remarkable speed to hit the 6-million target; the game hasn’t been out for a complete month yet. The modern remakes have all had similarly healthy runs, with RE2 selling 16.8m units so far, RE3 doing 10.9m, and RE4 cracking 12.2m. Needless to say, expect way more new and remade entries in the future as Capcom continues to ride the franchise’s increasing popularity.
The press release also reminds players “additional game content” and “ongoing support” are in the works. Eurogamer’s Dom Peppiatt has one key request when it comes to DLC content and Grace Ashcroft’s involvement moving forward, but fans are hoping to learn more about Leon’s private life in recent years instead.
An interesting thing to note is that Capcom’s statement also underlines the series’ 30th-anniversary celebration set to happen on 22nd March, which is right around the corner. “Capcom is readying various plans for this anniversary to delight series fans, such as a collaboration between Universal Studios Japan and Resident Evil Requiem in 2026, and orchestral concerts in Japan, the US, and Europe.” The wording suggests there’s more happening, so maybe start betting on “next remake” predictions now.
Meanwhile, original Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya says he’s been having trouble sleeping after seeing how scary Requiem is. Now that’s a twist.
