CVS Pharmacy has completed a deal to purchase 63 former Rite Aid stores.

The drugstore chain announced on Wednesday that it has acquired and is now operating 63 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs stores in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Rite Aid purchased Bartell Drugs in 2020.

CVS also acquired the prescription files of 626 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs pharmacies in 15 states.

The drugstore chain stated that nine million former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs customers have transitioned to CVS.

To increase capacity and fill open roles, CVS has hired more than 3,500 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drug employees.

“In addition, the company has made targeted investments in existing CVS Pharmacy locations, such as scheduling additional support, enhancing recruitment and hiring, and strengthening training programs, to ensure the teams are best positioned to continue to deliver service excellence to all customers and patients, whether existing or new,” the company said in a news release.

In May, Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for a second time. The company then closed all of its more than 1,200 stores. The last two Rite Aid pharmacies closed on Sept. 29 in Bainbridge Island, Washington, and in Bend, Oregon.

“Helping to maintain convenience for the community and ongoing access to necessary prescriptions were the major factors CVS Pharmacy considered when deciding which stores and prescription files to purchase,” the company said in the news release. “Most CVS Pharmacy locations that received prescription files from Rite Aid are located within three miles of an existing Rite Aid store and nearly half are within a mile.”

As of June 30, CVS had approximately 9,000 pharmacy locations, more than 1,000 walk-in and primary care medical clinics.

Rite Aid was founded in 1962 with a single store in Scranton called the Thrift D Discount Center. The company once had more than 4,600 stores operating in 31 states and Washington D.C.

Rite Aid was based in East Pennsboro Township, near Camp Hill, for decades before moving to Philadelphia in 2022.
