This is just how a week goes in La La Land. Ryan Gosling will not be starring in Everything Everywhere All at Once directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s upcoming Universal film, Deadline confirmed. Somebody not starring in a movie is usually not that interesting — lots of people don’t star in lots of movies! But it runs contrary to Deadline’s report just a week ago that Gosling was “set to star” in the secret project. Now, he’s out. Is there hot drama behind the scenes of the Oscar winners’ follow-up project?
Well, not really. It turns out Gosling was still in negotiations with the project, despite the original report. Per the latest Deadline article, the Daniels’ film received a California tax credit to shoot in Los Angeles this summer and could not move those shooting dates. Gosling had some other unnamed obligations and couldn’t make those shooting dates. So this dream-team follow-up between the Oscar winners and the Project Hail Mary superstar was cut off due to timing, not creative differences.
The Daniels and Universal are continuing to work on the project, and those shooting dates this summer seem pretty set, so expect a new announcement sometime soon. Maybe Gosling’s Kenemy Simu Liu can come on, fresh off Oh, Mary!.
