Conservative commentator Scott Jennings on Monday said it was “kind of funny” of President Donald Trump to post an artificial intelligence-generated video of himself bombing “No Kings” protesters with feces — prompting a heated discussion on CNN.
Jennings argued on “The Source with Kaitlan Collins” that Trump was merely making a point with the bizarre video, namely that the “No Kings” protests across America on Saturday were an inherent waste of time because “we don’t have a monarchy in this country.”
“We have a democracy,” he told Collins. “People voted, and they elected the president, and the only thing they’re mad about is that he is lawfully executing the office of the presidency and enforcing laws that have been on the books for a long time.”
Jennings further argued that the protesters “made up a reason to have a rally,” thus refusing to consider that the millions who attended might have a litany of gripes with the administration, and said about the video: “I think it was kind of funny to be honest with you.”
His fellow panelist, CNN political commentator Karen Finney, staunchly disagreed.
“No,” she said. “It was absolutely disgusting. And it is in line with so many things that the president has said where he talks about anybody who disagrees with him or didn’t vote for him as the enemy. And in my lifetime, I’ve never seen that in a president.”
Finney noted that Saturday’s protesters engaged in “the whole point of America and of our democracy” by peacefully making their voices heard. She said Trump’s video is where “this so-called satire ends” as it suggests that it’s “not OK to hold your president to account.”
Jennings agreed with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who said in a clip played on the air that Republicans need to take “anger on the left” seriously, but argued Democrats “would have had a better use of their time” by knocking on doors than marching “in crazy cat costumes.”
“So, Scott, you’re saying that Americans who decide they want to take to the streets, and make their voices heard, because they feel like their president is not listening to them, and frankly, in some instances, has said we’re ‘the enemy,’ simply because we disagree with him, you’re saying that’s not a good use of time?” Finney countered.
She continued, “You’re criticizing these people who went out to be Americans and say they love their country, and want their president to listen to them, that’s not a good use of time? That’s outrageous.”
Jennings argued that “normal people” stayed home Saturday to watch college football, only to then claim, “I don’t care how they spend their time.” He then reiterated that this is “not a monarchy” in an attempt to once again downplay the reasons behind the protests.
Finney argued that America might not be a monarchy, but that Trump is acting like a king.
“Time and time again, we are seeing him consolidating power, we are seeing him ignoring the co-equal branches of government,” she said. “He has essentially neutered Congress, and Republicans in Congress are fecklessly allowing him to just do whatever he wants.”
Finney continued, “Right now, we could be reopening the government if the president would step up and say, ‘Let’s everybody come together and let’s figure out this solution.’ He keeps consolidating power. That is what a king does.”
She concluded, “And he goes after his political enemies. That is what a monarch does. He is now trying to silence the media. That is what you see in an autocracy.”
