SOUTH BELOIT, Wis. (WTVO) — South Beloit High School is notifying families after cases of a highly contagious skin infection were detected in several students.
Superintendent Dr. Nikolas Butenhoff told families Wednesday that cases of impetigo were found at the school.
Impetigo is a skin infection caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes, and appears as red sores or blisters around the nose and mouth, hands, or other exposed areas.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the sores can break open and drain fluid, forming a yellowish-brown crust.
While impetigo is generally not serious, it can spread quickly, especially in school or sports settings.
Butenhoff said the school has increased cleaning and disinfecting of high touch surfaces, bathrooms, and locker rooms.
Parents are advised to seek medical attention and keep their child home from school if they exhibit symptoms.
