Suspicious devices reported near NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani residence
Police said no injuries or property damage have been reported at this time.
NEW YORK − Two people are in custody after reports of suspicious devices near Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, police said March 7.
New York City police officers were on scene for a scheduled demonstration near East End Avenue and 88th Street, near the mayor’s mansion in Manhattan, NYPD said in a statement. At around 11:40 a.m., officers were alerted to two suspicious devices in the area. Police said neither no injuries or property damage have been reported at this time.
At the time, pardoned Jan. 6 rioter Jake Lang, a conservative influencer, was a part of an anti-Islam demonstration taking place outside of Gracie Mansion.
A group of counter-protesters also gathered where Lang had a scheduled protest, according to Agence France-Presse reports. Images from the protest showed a man holding what appeared to be a homemade device that was smoking but didn’t explode. The man was later seen being taken into custody.
Two people of interest have been taken into custody as the investigation is ongoing, NYPD said. Police haven’t identified who was taken into custody.
Mamdani is the first Muslim mayor of New York City. The incident came during Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.
It wasn’t clear if the mayor or first lady Rama Duwaji were at Gracie Mansion. A spokesperson for Mamdani referred questions to NYPD.
