Sydney Sweeney is no stranger to sparking a fashion conversation, and her latest look is likely to do just that.

The “Euphoria” star, who set off a cultural firestorm earlier this year with her American Eagle denim campaign, was honored at Variety’s Power of Women event on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Sweeney, 28, wore an elegant, metallic silver dress by Christian Cowan. But the light-catching gown also had some edge with its shimmery semi-sheer material and form-fitting design.

But whether she’s turning heads on the silver screen or ruffling feathers on the red carpet, Sweeney isn’t fazed by the noise of people’s opinions.

“I play a lot of very divisive characters, and I think that a lot of people think they know me, but they don’t,” Sweeney told Variety in an interview published Monday, Oct. 27. “So, when people think, ‘Ah, she’s a sex symbol,’ or ‘She’s leaning into that,’ I’m like, ‘No, I just feel good and I’m doing it for myself and I feel strong.’

“And I hope that I can inspire other women to be confident and just flaunt what they got and feel good because you shouldn’t have to apologize or hide or cover up in any room.”

Sweeney has also been pushing boundaries in the hair department. “The White Lotus” actress, who’s been promoting her upcoming sports biopic “Christy,” debuted a bleach blonde bob at the film’s Los Angeles premiere during the annual AFI Fest on Oct. 25.

What ‘Christy’ role taught Sydney Sweeney about surviving Hollywood

Showbiz can be a dogfight sometimes, but Sweeney isn’t one to throw in the towel.

During her speech at Variety’s Power of Women event, the Emmy-nominated actress paid tribute to boxing icon Christy Martin, whom she portrays in the David Michôd-directed film “Christy.” The docudrama chronicles Martin’s transformation from West Virginia teenager to championship boxer in the 1990s, as well as her struggles with LGBTQ identity and domestic violence.

Martin’s moving life story made an impact on Sweeney, who bulked up for the film by gaining about 30 pounds and training three times a day for three months before production.

“I’m not a fighter in the ring, but I recognized something of myself in Christy,” Sweeney said. “I know what it feels like to be underestimated, to have people define you before you’ve had a chance to define yourself. I know what it feels like to have to prove that you deserve to be here, to be seen, to be taken seriously.”

Sweeney and Martin had a reunion at the Variety gala, with the pair nearly matching as Martin posed alongside Sweeney on the red carpet in a light heather gray suit.

“Every one of us has our own fight. And Christy reminds us all that strength doesn’t always look loud; sometimes it’s just getting back up, again and again, no matter who’s watching,” Sweeney said. “Playing her taught me that surviving isn’t the end of the story, it’s the beginning of reclaiming it.”
