‘The Housemaid’ Author Reveals True Identity
With The Housemaid coming off a successful theatrical run and The Housemaid‘s Secret coming soon, the literary source material’s author is stepping out of the shadows.
The writer known as Freida McFadden recently explained “it’s time” to share her true identity, revealing her name is actually Sara Cohen, and she works as a doctor treating brain disorders when not penning The Housemaid series.
“I’m at a point in my career when I’m tired of this being a secret,” she explained to USA Today. “I’m tired of people debating if I’m a real person or if I’m three men. I am a real person and I have a real identity and I don’t have anything to hide.”
Cohen stepped back from working full-time as a doctor in 2023, a year after releasing The Housemaid. And although her co-workers discovered her pseudonym, they were “really nice about it” and even kept her secret.
“My whole goal was to keep it a secret until I was (ready to) step back from my doctor job, so it wouldn’t be like everyone I work with suddenly knew and it compromised my ability to do my job,” said Cohen. “But I have stepped away from my job. I’m only working like once or twice a month.”

Despite sharing her true identity, the author plans to continue going by McFadden in her writing career. “Even though I haven’t told my real name until now, I feel like I have shared the real me all along and everything I’ve told them has been the truth. Even though the name will be a surprise, nothing else will. I’ve always been genuine with my readers,” she said.
Based on her 2023 novel The Handmaid’s Secret, Paul Feig is returning to direct the Lionsgate sequel along with Sydney Sweeney back as Millie Calloway. Kirsten Dunst co-stars.
In The Housemaid’s Secret, premiering Dec. 17, 2027, Millie returns, taking a job keeping house for a woman she’s never allowed to see — only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.
