This is just like a second shot to the chest
Have you got a thing for basketball’s off-court drama? Well, this one might be worth your time. After all, it draws in two big names from different worlds — rapper Iggy Azalea and former NBA guard Nick Young.
Often, when hip-hop and hoops collide like that, wild stories tend to follow. This one did too, but it arguably hit even harder. It becomes evident when you realize it is centered on Young’s infidelity as well as the way he got caught, in about as blatant a way as it could be.
Young was caught cheating
Remember when Gilbert Arenas and then-Washington Wizards teammate Andray Blatche had an affair with a team cheerleader who later lost her job? The former three-time All-Star and 2003 MIP once admitted boredom played a part in their decision to get romantically involved with her.
In a way, Young’s situation wasn’t all that different. Why? Because at the time his own infidelity came to light, Azalea was away and with the “Fancy” rapper gone, that very boredom soon seemed to creep in. That’s exactly when “Swaggy P” seemed to have crossed the line — inviting another woman into the home he and Azalea were sharing.
None of it might have surfaced if not for a bit of modern irony, namely, home security. Something like that, reviewing two or three decades earlier, even luxury homes rarely had.
However, mind you, this was the mid-2010s and ultimately, the cameras told the story in full. Azalea had hard proof — her fiancé caught on video, leaving little room for denial — and soon, everyone knew about it.
“I found out he had brought other women into our home while I was away and caught them on the security footage,” Azalea said in late June 2016, explaining that it prompted her to end things with the one-time NBA champion.
Young’s betrayal
The cameras did their job — though not for the reason they were installed. Azalea hadn’t imagined she’d one day be using them to confirm her fiancé’s betrayal and the reality seemed to hit her like a second punch.
“This is just like a second shot to the chest,” she tweeted, describing how the “discovery” felt.
The Australian star, now 35, later admitted she barely recognized the man she thought she loved, writing, “I don’t even know who the hell it is I’ve been loving all this time.”
In truth, the breakup wasn’t much of a surprise to anyone paying attention to those types of celebrity stuff.
Their relationship, which had reportedly started in November 2013, had already been shaky. The most famous example of that was a leaked video months earlier. It showed Young bragging to fellow Los Angeles Lakers player D’Angelo Russell about being involved with other women.
Russell then leaked it — a controversial move that violated one of the NBA’s oldest locker-room codes.
That clip alone might have planted the first doubts. It very well also might have pushed Azalea to start checking the cameras when something felt off.
In the end, “Swaggy P” went from near-engagement to single, joining a long list of NBA players publicly called out for infidelity. Ironically, even with his well-earned reputation as a sharp bench scorer, the 40-year-old probably wouldn’t make an all-time cheating starting five, since you’d be hard-pressed not to pick guys like Tony Parker, Shaquille O’Neal and Carmelo Anthony first.
