A single new skin that will be added to Battlefield 6 in the near future has set off a firestorm online among its dedicated fanbase, who are on the lookout for any signs that EA is going to fill the game with wacky outfits.

Before Battlefield 6 launched earlier this month to huge playercounts and positive reviews, the devs behind the online milsim FPS repeatedly suggested that cosmetic skins in BF6 wouldn’t feature over-the-top crossovers with celebs or cartoons. This was in direct response to how players had grown frustrated with the weirder skins added to Battlefield‘s competitor, Call of Duty, over the last few years. This kicked off a whole skin saga that even saw the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 walking back plans for some wacky skins and promising to do better. At launch, players were mostly happy with BF6‘s realistic skins. But previews of season one have started hitting the web, and one new skin seems to have caught the attention of thousands of players.

On October 22, Reddit user Ohforfk posted a screenshot of a single blue soldier skin with a skull face mask. The screenshot was seemingly pulled from this PC Gamer post about the new skins coming in season one. The Reddit post, titled “‘Grounded skins for a while’ – 18 days exactly,” is a response to some players who have claimed the game would have grounded skins for some time or suggested that EA wouldn’t add wacky skins right away.

“So, weren’t we supposed to have realistic skins for some time?” posted Ohforfk. “Something that someone would really wear during war? Yet it seems that with the start of season 1, everything will turn to colorful mess, with no way of differentiating teams based on uniforms and [the] game looking more like [a] paintball event. Colorful weapons with pictures, colorful camos with neon accents, looking like straight up from ASG or paintball. People were sold on a vision of game looking like a real battlefield, with soldiers not a bunch of randos like in 2042, yet it was all a lie and it will only get worse down the road – beta, with all the soldiers wearing matching uniforms was the most immersive experience, you can say goodbye to that vibe. There wont’t be uniforms matching bioms, there won’t be a way to turn off any awful skins, typical bait and switch.”

The post has 6,000+ upvotes and nearly 2,000 comments, many of which agree with Ohforfk’s thoughts, with the most popular reply stating: “Man that looks fucking dumb. God this game makes BF1 look like a piece of art.” Many other comments are also angry and disappointed about the blue uniform, which is believed to be a Halloween gift for BF6 players. And while some point out that this, and the other season one skins, are still fairly grounded compared to what you might see in most other AAA online shooters, the reality is that the most dedicated players in the Battlefield community don’t want any colorful skins like this.

This skin has also ignited a debate about what “grounded” even means. To some, this new blue BF6 skin is in fact fairly grounded and looks like something that fits in the world of the game. To others, it’s a travesty and ruins their immersion, and is far too weird and colorful. Regardless of how you feel about it, I don’t envy Battlefield 6‘s artists and devs who have to walk what might be the narrowest and most challenging tightrope in the video game industry right now. Good luck out there.
