Brady Ebert, a founding member of the band Turnstile, was arrested on Tuesday for the attempted murder of lead singer Brendan Yates’s father. On March 29, Ebert “used his vehicle to run over Brendan’s father, causing severe physical trauma,” according a statement the band gave Rolling Stone on April 2. The band confirmed that William Yates is recovering, saying that he “has successfully undergone surgery, and we’re hoping for the best possible outcome in his recovery.” Ebert was taken into custody on March 31 and charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault, per Montgomery County, Maryland, arrest records.
The alleged incident began on Sunday when Ebert drove up to William Yates’s driveway and began honking and shouting “obscenities,” per Fox 5 News DC, at Yates’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. When William Yates came outside, Ebert drove toward him, pushing him into his lawn, at which point Yates threw a rock at him. Ebert turned and hit Yates with his car, swerved toward Yates’s daughter and 3-year-old grandson, then drove off. Police responded to a 911 call at 4:41 p.m. “During the incident, and for reasons still under investigation, Ebert struck the victim with his 2001 Buick before leaving the scene without contacting 9-1-1 or providing aid,” a Montgomery County police press release states. “The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, including a broken leg.”
Turnstile parted ways with Ebert in 2022. “Turnstile cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community,” the band told Rolling Stone. “After exhausting every available resource to support his access to help and recovery, a boundary ultimately had to be set when healthy communication was no longer possible and he began threatening violence.” At the time, the band wrote that “We are deeply grateful for our time together. Our love for him continues and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.” In the years since, Ebert has continued to threaten violence toward his former band members. “We never addressed it,” Turnstile said. “We chose to protect his privacy and the circumstances around his departure, even when he did nothing to be deserving of that protection. Over the past few months, his threats only escalated further … We have no language left for Brady.”
