Virgil van Dijk reaction to Federico Chiesa speaks volumes after role in Wolves winner
Virgil van Dijk was furious with Federico Chiesa after Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves at Molineux saw the Reds miss the chance to climb into fourth position in the Premier League
Virgil van Dijk expressed his frustration towards Federico Chiesa following Wolves’ decisive goal at Molineux. Rob Edwards’ team pulled off a shock 2-1 victory in the Premier League, causing the Reds to miss their chance to ascend to fourth place.
Mohamed Salah scored an equaliser in the 83rd minute amidst a frenzied finale after Rodrigo Gomes had initially put the Midlands side ahead. However, Andre set off jubilant celebrations amongst the fans with a winner in the 94th minute.
Liverpool captain Van Dijk was left seething after the late blow and shouted at Chiesa, clearly dissatisfied with the Italian’s performance. Alisson had aimed a pass at the winger, but when the two failed to link up, Chiesa did not chase back to recover the ball.

Andre’s shot then ricocheted past the Brazilian and into the goal. A number of issues were highlighted in the post-match breakdown.
Van Dijk was more composed in his post-match interview, though still irked by the manner of the loss, reports the Mirror.
“Conceding goals is always frustrating,” he told TNT Sport when asked about any frustrations regarding the way Wolves scored their two goals. “Obviously we’ve come on the back of a couple of clean sheets and I think defensively we have been very solid.
“But yeah, listen, it is what it is and we have to move quickly on because we come back here in a couple of days and we want to do well in the FA Cup as well and we have to show a reaction.”
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard believes his old club were slow to respond following Alisson’s mistake. Speaking on TNT Sports, he said: “The Liverpool players from the goalkeeper’s mistake – it’s not the greatest clearance from Alisson – but I just thought they were slow to react in midfield as well,”.
“You know, Wolves are jumping on the first ball, picking up the second ball. It’s a poor goal from a Liverpool point of view to concede, and it’s another late one. It’s happened too many times that they’re conceding these late goals.
“I just think the speed of the reaction from the poor clearance – I’m sure Alisson will want to own up to it – but the reaction’s just too slow.”
However, ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock pointed the finger elsewhere, suggesting Curtis Jones was at fault for the pass to Alisson.
On BBC Radio 5 Live, Warnock explained: “It was a mistake from Curtis Jones – he plays a ball into Alisson and Alisson’s never going to get any purchase on it,”.
“Andre looked heavy in the last five or so minutes but he takes a shot and it takes a wicked deflection to loop over Alisson.”
