Republican lawmakers are call over the prospect of not having a plan in place to lower health care costs, as Democrats continue to dig in their heels over the issue at the heart of the government shutdown.
At issue are the Affordable Care Act tax credits set to disappear under President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill that Democrats are refusing to back in a continuing resolution to fund the government.
Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) told CNN that he had a recent phone call with President Trump who made it clear “he doesn’t want to hurt people.”
“His concern is, is there something better we can do?” Van Drew said, adding that he told the president, “I don’t think we’re going to get it done in a matter of weeks.”
Van Drew said he agreed with those in his party pushing to have a plan in place to help working-class voters afford health care.
“It’s morally bankrupt not to do it and it is politically stupid,” Van Drew said.
MAGA Republican Sen. Josh Hawley (MO) is also sounding the alarm about how unaffordable health care has become for average Americans and that his party needs to do something about it.
“If we don’t do anything their premiums are gonna almost double. They’re too high right now. We’re talking about working people,” Hawley said. “So it’s just, we’ve got to do something. This is totally unaffordable.”
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, told CNN, “I go to bed at night thinking about health care. Of course, I’m always thinking about what we can do to find a solution. I say that but it’s more pointed forward, because we need [Sen. Chuck] Schumer to open the government.”
ACA open enrollment begins November 1, which is considered a “critical deadline” for there to be some congressional agreement on what to do about the situation.
