Yes, we know it hasn’t even been a week since “The Diplomat” season 3 debuted — all eight episodes of the political thriller’s third installment dropped on Netflix on Thursday, October 16 — but we’ve already got our focus zoomed in on season 4, which was formally announced back in May 2025.
And given that shocking cliffhanger from the season 3 finale (don’t worry, no spoilers here!), fans of the Debora Cahn-created diplomatic drama will no doubt be waiting with bated breath to see what Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and company get up to next season.
“I’m so excited about Season 4,” Cahn told Tudum. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. We get to the end of a season and I always think, ‘Well, there’s no way that we can do this again.’ And then we dig back into it, and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, we have to keep going.’”
And when “The Diplomat” season 4 does begin production, it will see several new series regulars: Old “The West Wing” buddies Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford, who play President Grace Penn and first husband Todd Penn on the Netflix series, have been bumped up to main-cast status for the fourth edition. “Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus … It’s an insane bag of candy,” Cahn said to Tudum. “Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.”
But a few other familiar faces won’t be returning to the political drama in season 4: Celia Imrie as former political advisor Margaret “Meg” Roylin, who dies by suicide while in CIA custody, and Michael McKean as U.S. President Rayburn, whose death sets off a major chain of events, including V.P. Grace Penn’s promotion to the presidency. Unless those characters appear in flashback or, weirdly, via dream sequence, it is unlikely that either actor will be involved in season 4.
However, it is very likely that “The Diplomat” mainstays, including Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, David Gyasi, Ato Essandoh and Miguel Sandova,l will all be reprising their characters for the fourth installment.
