Wireless Festival Canceled as Kanye West Blocked from U.K. Entry
The controversial Kanye West-headlining Wireless Festival in the U.K. has been canceled, following the artist’s denial of entry into the country due to his antisemitic hate speech over the past few years, according to a statement from the festival.
“The Home Office has withdrawn YE’s ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom,” the statement reads. “As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders.
“As with every Wireless Festival, multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance of booking YE and no concerns were highlighted at the time.
“Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognise the real and personal impact these issues have had. As YE said today, he acknowledges that words alone are not enough, and in spite of this still hopes to be given the opportunity to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the UK.”
Given the uproar around West’s comments in the past several years, it is reasonable to question how many “stakeholders” expressed “no concerns,” although controversy around the two concerts in Los Angeles escalated significantly after they took place. Live Nation is a promoter of both the Los Angeles concerts and the Wireless Festival.
The Wireless festival has been enmeshed in controversy ever since West was announced as its headliner, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer voicing disapproval within days.
As criticism of West has grown following his two sold-out performances in Los Angeles last week, momentum built against him, and it became clear that permission for him to enter the country was by no means guaranteed. West apologized for his past statements in a full-page Wall Street Journal ad in January, but gave no further statement until early Tuesday U.K. time, when he offered to speak with Jewish leaders in the U.K.
Melvin Benn, who serves as managing director at Festival Republic, the U.K. promoter behind Wireless, issued a statement to Variety on Monday defending Ye based on his own experiences dealing with people who suffer from mental health issues. “I have witnessed many episodes of despicable behaviour that I have had to forgive and move on from,” he wrote. “If I wasn’t before, I have become a person of forgiveness and hope in all aspects of my life, including work.”
