‘Wuthering Heights’ Leads Again With $4.6 Million

A24 and Lionsgate each brought a newcomer to the Friday box office with “How to Make a Killing” and “I Can Only Imagine 2.” However, they were unable to usurp the No. 1 spot. from last week’s champion, “Wuthering Heights.”

“How to Make a Killing” landed at No. 4 on its opening day, grossing $1.6 million from 1,625 North American theaters. Rivals have the comedy thriller pulling in $3.2 million by Sunday. Directed by “Emily the Criminal” filmmaker John Patton Ford, “How to Make a Killing” follows Glen Powell as Becket Redfellow, a vengeful man who decides to kill his way through his estranged family in order to claim an exuberant inheritance. Other cast members include Margaret Qualley, Ed Harris, Jessica Henwick, Topher Grace and Zach Woods. The film is a loose adaptation of the 1949 black comedy “Kind Hearts and Coronets.”

Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights” landed at No. 1 for the second Friday in a row with $4.6 million domestically. That’s about a 56% drop from its opening day earnings. Rivals have the sexy literary drama starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi earning $14.2 million by Sunday. That would bring its North American total to $60 million through two weeks of release.

Sony’s “GOAT” scored $3.8 million domestically on Friday for a second-place finish. That’s a 46% decline from last Friday’s numbers. The animated family film, which follows a scrawny anthropomorphic goat with dreams of sports stardom, looks to earn $13 million to 14 million through Sunday for a domestic total of $54 million to $55 million.

Lionsgate took third with “I Can Only Imagine 2.” The faith-based musical drama earned $3.75 million on Friday and should round up $8 million to $9 million by Sunday. The 2018 original reached breakout hit status with $86 million against a $7 million budget. Based on the best-selling Christian song of all time, “I Can Only Imagine 2” follows MercyMe’s Bart Millard as he navigates faith, family and fame after his inspirational ballad skyrocketed him to global recognition. Milo Ventimiglia and Dennis Quaid star in the film, which is directed by Andrew Erwin and Brent McCorkle.

Amazon MGM’s “Crime 101” landed in fifth place on its second Friday at the domestic box office. The heist thriller added $1.53 million on Friday, a 61% drop from its opening day last Friday. It should add $5.46 million by Sunday, pushing the North American total to $24 million.
