Following the announcement last week, the video player, icon, and app-wide redesign is now widely rolling out to YouTube for Android and iOS.

All YouTube icons throughout the app have been updated. This includes the top and bottom bars, as well as in the video page/player. In general, icons feature bolder and more rounded outlines that should help visibility.

Old vs. new

The majority of changes are to the video player, with the goal of obscuring less content. In portrait, you’ll notice the new icon set, with the landscape button now larger and placed in a circle. Premium controls also get a nice modernization.

There’s a new like and dislike button with the longer thumb. When you like certain videos, there’s now a “custom, dynamic visual treatment” based on the content: “For instance, liking a music video will trigger an animated musical note and sports videos include a visual cue from the game.”

The landscape player sees thumbs up/down, comment, save, share, and overflow placed in a pill-shaped container at the bottom-left corner. There’s also a cleaner “More videos” button. When a video is paused, the background is no longer darkened.

Meanwhile, double-tapping to skip features a more subtle and compact animation compared to before to be “less intrusive to your video watching experience.”

Other changes announced last week include:

  • When moving between tabs, there’s a “more seamless” transition animation that slides up the feed.
  • When saving videos to playlists or Watch Later, a “refreshed design simplifies the process.”
  • Comment threading makes it easier to follow conversations and replies.

We’re seeing this player and icon redesign widely roll out to YouTube for Android and iOS (version 20.42) today. Be sure to force stop the app and relaunch.
