Disney+ has announced it is rolling out vertical video to subscribers in the US today, with global rollouts to follow. Here are the details on Disney’s new ‘Verts’ feature.
Disney+ debuts ‘Verts’ as new discovery feature that’s just the start of vertical video plans
If you’re in the US, starting today you might see a new ‘Verts’ icon in the Disney+ tab bar on your iPhone.
That’s because the previously announced vertical video feature is rolling out now.
With a tap of the new Verts icon in the navigation bar on mobile, users enter a vertical video feed and can swipe through a stream of scenes and moments from movies and shows on Disney+, and seamlessly add to their Watchlist or jump directly into playback.
With the latest streaming hits and an incredible catalog spanning more than 100 years of storytelling, we’re making it easier for fans to discover what to watch next. Verts offers a fun, fast way to explore that catalog right from the moment users open the app. It brings the magic of Disney’s storytelling into a format that feels modern, engaging, and tailor-made for how fans already enjoy discovering video on mobile devices.
Disney says early tests have proven that vertical video leads to increased user engagement on mobile. As a result, today’s ‘Verts’ rollout is only the start of what’s coming.
The press release also says that Disney’s team “is exploring and experimenting with ways to expand far beyond content discovery.”
What are some examples? Disney mentions the following:
- content from creators that reflects our fandoms
- other storytelling formats
- new content types
- more personalized experiences
On the heels of Disney’s OpenAI partnership, the company previously mentioned that user-generated Sora videos would one day come to Disney+. Now it sounds like there are much bigger plans for vertical video.
