NEW YORK (WABC) — The first known case of a more severe strain of Mpox has been discovered in New York City – it is called Mpox clade I.
Since November 2024, there have been 11 cases of this more severe strain across the country.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these cases were all in people who had recently traveled to areas associated with the outbreak in Central and Eastern Africa, or who were linked to people who had traveled from these areas.
The CDC says the risk of clade I monkeypox to the general public in the United States remains low.
A two-dose vaccine for Mpox was first made available in 2022 for people at high risk.
