Everyone is talking about Lily Allen’s new album, including Gwyneth Paltrow. The 40-year-old singer set the internet ablaze with her new album West End Girl, and the 14-track body of work is raw, vulnerable, and, as Paltrow described it, a “masterpiece.”
Paltrow, who is a close friend of Allen’s mom, showed support for the album, sharing “West End Girl” on her Instagram Stories, writing, “This album is a masterpiece.”
Allen dropped her album on October 24 – it’s her first in 7 years, and she wrote and recorded it in just 10 days. While she has said it’s not all factual, it didn’t take long for it to become the talk of the town as she lyrically demolishes her ex-husband, David Harbour, blowing the top off their “open” marriage with cheating allegations, emotional turmoil, and embarrassing anecdotes in songs like “Pussy Palace.”
Allen also opens up about how the relationship challenged her sobriety in “Relapse.” “I need a drink, I need a Valium,” she sings. “You pushed me this far, and I just need to be numb. If I relapse, I know I stand to lose it all.”
Interestingly, Paltrow is actually a character in her sobriety journey. As noted by DailyMail, the “Tennis” singer detailed how she drank so much she became unconscious at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party in her memoir My Thoughts Exactly. “I was very, very drunk and I head-butted something behind Orlando Bloom and knocked myself out,” she wrote.
She later told E! Her friend Chris Martin and his then-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, drove her home. “He [Chris] left a Post-it note on my fridge just saying, ‘Give me a call tomorrow.” I did,” she said.
“We went for lunch and he said, ‘I don’t think you’re in a great place right now, Lily, are you? Here’s the number of someone who can help.’ They [Chris and Gwyneth] are great people,” Allen explained.
Harbour’s mistress revealed
It’s believed that Allen is talking about more than one woman, but since the album’s release, costume designer Natalie Tippet confirmed to The Daily Mail that she had an affair with Harbour while they worked on Netflix’s We Have A Ghost.
She told the outlet that she’s heard the songs and confirmed it was her private texts that Allen is reading in “Madeline.” “I have a family and things to protect. I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, and I understand this is going on. It’s a little bit scary for me,” she said.
Harbour has not responded, but he was seen at Universal Epic Universe over the weekend with Allen’s daughters, Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 12.
