Michigan actress Kristen Bell is facing criticism for an anniversary post dedicated to her husband.
Bell, who is from Huntington Woods, took to Instagram to tribute Dax Shepard, who is from Milford, in honor of the couple’s 12th anniversary.
The tribute, which includes a photo of an intimate hug between the pair, is harmless, but it’s the caption that has many in the entertainment world talking.
“Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: ‘I would never kill you,” it said. “A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.”
It’s an odd way to say I love you, but the couple is known for their peculiar antics, such as skipping Golden Globes parties to play “Settlers of Catan” or watching the Lions while Harrison Ford speaks.
Some, such as celebrities Mae Whitman and Howie Mandel, commented, finding the post amusing. And the official account for Dateline also chimed in, commenting, “Screenshotted.”
But some of Bell’s 15.8 million followers did not find the post funny. Some called it “weird,” while others felt it made light of domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“just an fyi, posting this caption during domestic violence awareness month is unbelievably tone deaf :/ please reconsider,” one person wrote.
“hey! i’ve been a fan for a while. I just wanted to say that please don’t joke about domestic violence. Please keep in mind that this is something real that lots of people suffer on a daily basis. And the text could be triggering for victims,” another said.
“Thats a wildly sad and insensitive thing to say considering it’s domestic violence awareness month and thousands of women have died at the hands of the man they trusted…” another read.
Bell has since limited the comments on her post.
Bell received an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a comedy series for playing Joanne in Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This” in July. She is known for roles as the voice of Princess Anna in “Frozen,” and as the title characters in both the TV series “Veronica Mars” and movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”
Shepherd has gained acclaim for roles in NBC’s “Parenthood,” “Idiocracy” and “Without a Paddle.”
The couple first met in 2007 and got engaged in 2009. They later wed in 2013, tying the knot at a Beverly Hills courthouse and frequently return to their home state of Michigan.
They have two daughters Delta, 11, and Lincoln, 12.
