PlayStation to Start Putting Fans into PS5 Games with New Playerbase Program
Well, if you’ve ever wanted your likeness to appear as an official asset in a PlayStation game, you now have the chance: Sony has announced a new scheme called The Playerbase, where you can have yourself scanned and placed into a PS5 title.
To start off, one fan will be selected to appear as a character in Gran Turismo 7. Their likeness will be used for a limited time as a character portrait, and they’ll also get to design a permanent car decal. The winner will be invited to a studio in Los Angeles to have themselves scanned and design the livery, with applicants being accepted through the link.
PlayStation will select a handful of applicants for video interviews to learn more about them and their connection to the brand, and then the winner will be chosen based on that. The Playerbase starts with Gran Turismo 7, but Sony says it wants to expand the scheme to more PlayStation Studios titles in the future.
“The Playerbase is our way of saying thank you to the players who make PlayStation what it is today,” said vice president of global marketing Isabelle Tomatis. “We can’t wait to meet the fans who will step into the world of PlayStation in a whole new way.”
Of course, sports games over the years have allowed you to scan your likeness into the likes of NBA 2K and WWE 2K for years now through smartphone apps. What The Playerbase is doing, however, seems to be a far more professional approach where your likeness will be more accurately placed into a first-party release.
