Showdown as Baba Jamal faces late MP’s widow, 3 others in NDC Ayawaso East primaries
The Ayawaso East constituency is set for a decisive showdown on February 7, 2026, as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds its primaries to select a candidate for the March 3 by-election.
The contest follows the passing of incumbent MP Naser Toure, leaving a vacuum in one of the party’s most secure parliamentary seats.
Although five names appear on the ballot, the race has largely crystallized into a three-way battle between Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late MP, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria and Dr Yakubu Azindow, a political scientist.

With more than 1,100 delegates expected to gather at the Nima Cluster of Schools, the winning candidate must secure at least 551 votes to claim an outright majority.
Security arrangements are being handled by the Ghana Police Service, while the Electoral Commission oversees the process, with voting scheduled between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.
Polling data released by Global Info Analytics just days before the primary suggests that Hajia Amina Adam holds a commanding lead, with 58 percent of delegate preference.
This advantage places her well ahead of Baba Jamal and Dr Azindow, both of whom had previously challenged the late Naser Toure in the 2023 primaries.
