United to raise checked bag fees by $10 beginning April 3
United Airlines will raise checked bag fees by beginning Friday, the airline announced.
Beginning April 3, passengers will pay an extra $10 when checking a bag on most flights.
That means passengers will pay $50 for their first bag, but will continue to get a $5 discount if they prepay for their luggage 24 hours before departure — in which case the cost would total $45.
United also hiked the fee for its second bag by $10.
Passengers who fly in the airline’s premium cabins, earn Premier elite status or carry an eligible cobranded credit card will keep their free checked baggage perks.
United is the second U.S. airline to raise checked bag fees this week, as airlines battle rising jet fuel costs amid a global run-up in oil prices.

JetBlue was first to raise checked bag fees earlier this week.
It’s very possible other airlines could follow; historically, carriers have often followed one another in raising baggage fees.
United and most competitors last raised bag fees in early 2024.
