Walmart is making a major technological change in how shoppers buy its products.
The nation’s largest retailer has formed a partnership with OpenAI to offer items to consumers directly within ChatGPT, the popular artificial intelligence chatbot.
“For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change,” Doug McMillon, President and CEO, Walmart Inc. said in a statement, adding that the new AI experience will be “multi-media, personalized and contextual.”

In the coming months, shoppers will be able to buy Walmart products directly in ChatGPT using the AI service’s Instant Checkout. All items except fresh food will be included.
“The future of retail isn’t about replacing human connection with machines, it’s about using AI to remove friction and make everyday moments easier, smarter and more delightful,” Walmart said in its statement.
Instant Checkout lets users buy directly from participating retailers through ChatGPT, Food and Wine reported. Payments are processed through Stripe with the retailer receiving revenue from the sale minus a fee. Instant Checkout is available through all of Chat GPT’s service levels – Free, Plus and Enterprise.
Members of Sam’s Club, Walmart’s warehouse club, will also have access to the service.
Walmart has not confirmed when the feature will launch.
