Woman Has Cutest Way of Teaching Her Golden Retriever Not To Chase the Chickens
Honey, a 1-year-old Golden Retriever, has been the focus of her mom’s latest mission: training her to become a livestock guardian dog for their chickens. The challenge? Honey is far more interested in chasing the birds than protecting them! To help change that, Mom came up with a smart plan—getting Honey comfortable around baby chicks first.
In the video, Honey is shown on Day 3 of introductions with two tiny chicks. The chicks don’t seem bothered by her presence at all, while Honey remains curious, calm, and surprisingly gentle with them. Watching the trio interact is absolutely adorable!
On Day 1, Honey’s mom explained the training plan. “Our Honey is a 1-year-old Golden Retriever, and she has not been very good with our chickens, especially when we are not watching, so we are making a concentrated effort to train her to be a better livestock guardian dog. She will be spending a few minutes a day with our baby chicks, and we will watch her carefully. Our goal is to turn this bird dog into a bird-loving livestock guardian dog.”
They’re on Day 9 now, and so far, things seem to be going pretty well!

Can Golden Retrievers Be Livestock Guardian Dogs?
Commenters had mixed reactions to Honey being trained to be a livestock guardian dog. @joharris213 shared, “Goldens are the gentlest and sweetest of all poochies!”
@Horses1945 agreed but added, “They are, but with chickens, they cannot be trusted! LOL! I have the sweetest boy, but if one of our chickens gets in his yard, it’s over!”
From what I read during a quick search, Golden Retrievers usually aren’t the best choice for livestock guardian dogs. They were bred to chase and retrieve, so that instinct can make them more likely to go after livestock than protect it. But if you’re looking for a dog to hang out and play, Goldens are a great choice!
